Today we worked with a live model in an attempt to follow the instructions given previously to capture a portrait.

As is often the case, I struggled between doing my best to follow the instructions as best as I could and falling back to my intuitive habits.

My biggest challenge in class is that I can seldom see what I’m doing “right”, if anything, and for the most part, our instructor points out what I’m doing “wrong”, so I never feel confident, and my sketches never really look good to me.

When I got home and compared the sketch I had made by the end of the class with a photo the model approved of my taking, I can see that I was pretty close with a lot of what I drew, but still really failed to have a strong sense of how to follow the instructions given.

From what I understand, the remaining classes will focus on continuing to follow the instructions we’ve already gotten, so I’m thinking that this will be the last class I attend, and I’ll just continue working on my own.
