I’ve always been impressed by (and envious of) people who can create art from their imagination.
I do have an active imagination, but could never quite see how to move what I imagined out of my mind and on to the page with all the details required to be convincing.
When I started to draw again, I included learning-to-draw-from-my-imagination in my list of ambitions.
To date, I still feel far from achieving that goal. On the other hand, I am getting better at drawing what I see (from life) and recreating an existing image (from a photo).
Eventually, I realized that I could combine multiple photos to guide me so that I can draw a scene that only exists in my imagination. To be honest, this feels a bit like “cheating” and I’m not sure if I would recommend it to aspiring artists.
On the other hand, it is a lot of fun! This page includes my attempts so far.
In cases where I’ve used a photo of a pose I also drew from life, click on the photos below to see both side-by-side.
